Three great free admission concerts to round off the 28th Pordenone Blues Festival will be held on July 20th: star of soul reggae Nneka, the great grand guitarist Melvin Taylor Blues Machine and keyboard virtuoso Bob Malone with his band. It will be a great party with free admission, an unmissable musical event preceded and enriched by the 2019 Blues Contest valid for the selections of the 36th International Blues Challenge!

Born in Nigeria to a German mother and Nigerian father, Nneka approached music in the early years of her life, of course without going unnoticed. Having moved to Germany when she came of age, she met DJ Farhot, opened a concert for Sean Paul and sealed a start to a dazzling career in the name of Black Music. The legend of hip hop NAS calls her “an extraordinary artist”, the Sunday Times hailed her as the new Lauryn Hill. Nneka is a figure of great charisma: she was a judge in the fourth season of Nigerian Idol, but she also arrived overseas as a guest on David Letterman and BET’s 106 & Park and has stepped onto the most important stages of Europe. Her social commitment led her to found “The Rope Foundation” in 2012, with MC Sierra Leone and MC Ahmed Nyeje (Genda); a platform for support, expression and social inclusion through art for young boys and girls.

Melvin Taylor, born in 1959, is considered to be one the greatest blues guitarists in the world. Rolling Stone magazine called him “a blues innovator without ever losing sight of its roots”. The New York Times defined him as a volcanic guitarist who manages to bring the audience into a total state of excitement mixing, in his stage presence, an arsenal of rhythm, melody, bending to the extent possible and use of the wah-wah mixed with the taste of the tradition of famous Chicago blues. His outstanding technique, impeccable sense of rhythm and phrasing have helped to give him a place of honour among the masters of the six strings. Taylor found his place in the world of blues when he was very young and in 1980, he was noticed by Muddy Waters, who decided to take him along on tour. From 1982 to today he has released ten albums and nine singles and has performed thousands of concerts and festivals all over the world. Some of his best-known works are: Evidence Music – Bang That Bell (1999), Dirty Pool (2002), Melvin Taylor and the Slack Band (2003), and Rendezvous With the Blues (2004) up to the self-produced Beyond the Burning Guitar (2010), Sweet Taste of Guitar (2012), and Taylor Made (2013). At the end of the summer tour he will return to the studio with Melvin Taylors Blues Machine to record the new album.

Bob Malone attended Berkley College of Music, and in his career has played with a number of artists of the highest level: form Al Green to Jackson Browne, from The Neville Brothers to Dr. John, Bruce Springsteen and Leon Russell, to joining the band of the great John Fogerty with whom he has been performing on the most important stages in the world for years (the unforgettable 2012 Hyde Park concert in London, where Fogerty was joined on stage by Springsteen, as well as the joint tour with ZZTop last summer). Last year – at the same time as his participation in Umbria Jazz – Bob published, through the Italian label Appaloosa Records, the CD “Mojo Live – Live at the Grand Annex”, which joins his discography of six CD’s from 2001 to 2016, in addition to all collaborations with great artists, not least the great Ringo Starr. His style embraces the more brazen rock n’ roll and then blends it with the sound of New Orleans and the pure “Detroit” brand soul. On the Pordenone Blues Festival stage, he will be accompanied by Stefano Sanguigni on the electric guitar, Alessandro Maiorino on bass and Marco Breglia on drums.
