Roy Young & Band [Jamaica]

Willie Mitchell, the producer of all the great artists of Memphis (from Al Green to Ann Peebles) said: «Who would have thought that a singer born in Jamaica and living in Tel Aviv would save Soul Music in the USA?» He was talking about Roy Young, introduced as “an emerging phenomenon of world soul music at the no longer green age of sixty-one”. Born in the hills of Jamaica in a shack without running water or electricity, he expressed his love for music at a young age. While all his friends were listening to the latest ska and reggae hits, Roy was listening to groups like The Dells, The Drifters and The Temptations. At thirteen he settled in England, where he was introduced to the sound of artists such as Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Joe Tex and Solomon Burke. It was the time of the explosion of the vast Northern Soul movement, the late '60s and early '70s, and coincided with Roy's encounter with the music of one of the artists who would prove to be among his main inspirations, the great Sam Cooke. At fifteen he dropped out of school to go on tour with "The Work Shop", touching all of England. He graced the stage of the Marquee Club in London sharing it with Long John Baldry, at number 1 at the time in England with "Let the Heartache Begin", and with Arthur Brown, at the top of the UK charts with "Fire". He collaborated with musicians of the calibre of Long John Baldry, Arthur Brown, Marvin Gaye, Pat Rizzo of War and The Four Seasons who would also participate in his album published by Emi in the early '80s. A first taste of his performing skills will be given to you by listening to his “Memphis”, produced in the studio by Willie Mitchell (historical producer of Al Green), arranged by Gil Askey (Temptations and Curtis Mayfield) and entirely played by musicians from Memphis. But the real emotion will be given live like all true soul singers and after having performed on the most important stages of blues & soul around the world he also arrives at Pordenone accompanied by a ten-piece big band. Get ready to dance and be swept away by the enchantment of his voice.
